The Associate in Arts in African-American Studies for Transfer (AA-T) at East Los Angeles College offers a powerful and interdisciplinary examination of the historical, cultural, social, political, and artistic contributions of people of African descent in the United States and across the African Diaspora. Our curriculum moves beyond stereotypes to examine the realities of migration, settlement, community-building, identity, and political action. Economics is the study of how people make choices in an attempt to satisfy their unlimited wants with limited resources. Economics ranges from the very small to the very large. The study of individual economic decisions is called microeconomics. The study of the economy as a whole is called macroeconomics.
Using theoretical models or empirical data, Economists evaluate programs, study human behavior, and explain social phenomena. The work of Economists influences everything from public policy to household decisions.2

History is the systematic study and interpretation of the past. Historians find evidence about the past, ask questions of that evidence, and come up with explanations that make sense of what the evidence says about the people, events, places, and time periods under consideration. Far from being the study of facts and dates, understanding history means understanding how to read and interpret the past. It is through reading and interpreting our various pasts that we can know and understand the present and the future.1
History is part of a broader liberal arts education. Liberal arts graduates are well prepared for a range of professions鈥攖hanks to their analytical skills and acquired knowledge.2

Political science is the study of governments, public policies, and political behavior. It uses both humanistic perspectives and scientific skills to examine the United States and all regions of the world. It prepares you to think critically and independently, appreciate differing points of view, and understand current affairs.
With your degree in political science, you will be able to pursue careers in law, consulting, teaching, journalism and communications, polling and campaign management, business, international organizations, community service, nongovernmental organizations, and state, local, and federal government. It will also prepare you for participating in community organizations, electoral politics, advocacy groups, and elective or administrative positions in government.

Sociology is a social science involving the study of the social lives of people, groups, and societies.
The field of Sociology helps to develop new theories and inform social policy, programs, and laws. Sociologists often are the first point of reference for inquiries as to what is going on in the world, and more importantly, why, and how?2
A degree in Sociology provides a strong, basic foundation in core areas of the discipline and can prepare you to pursue careers in social services, health services, community services, law, research, higher education, and business.

The Associate of Arts in Social Work and Human Services for Transfer (AAT) degree, offered by the Social Science Department, is intended for students who plan to transfer and complete a bachelor's degree in social work, Human Services, or a related field at a California State University (CSU) campus. The curriculum is designed to meet lower-division major requirements for the social work and human services (or similar) major at a CSU, including collaborative health and human services, criminal justice, human services, social work, and sociology.
